Teach Too: Reading College: collaborating with employers to deliver maths in the context of the Green Car Project

Principal focus of the project

The project challenged students to design a green (battery powered) car to be raced in competitions and comply with strict regulations. To do this, they collaborated with employers to receive consultancy support, particularly focused on the maths required by the challenge. This involved a range of activities and engaging with engineers of differening seniority to help production of appropriate resource materials and deliver the required maths skills.

What is this about and what were the main findings?

Students were motivated by the real world context of the challenge and developed confidence in maths. Curriculum staff enhanced their skills, their knowledge of industry and current practices. Collaboration through restructuring curriculum delivery and assessments to take a project based approach also enabled multi-disciplinary working.
