Why undertake action research within prisons

Principal focus of the project

The focus was to explore the role of Lesson Study, as a model of action research, within offender learning provision, to support continuing professional development.

Areas of learning
What is this about and what were the main findings?

Lesson study was valued by the teachers as an opportuntiy to discuss teaching and learning issues and obtain feedback, although in this instance it had felt rushed. More lesson study cycles and more time for reflection would have been helpful. Learners were happy to have been involved and valued the opportunity to share their ideas about their learning experience. They saw the learner-teacher relationship as being paramount. Lesson study can support continuous professional development for educators in prison contexts creating pedagogic partnership dialogue between teachers and between teachers and learners
