What difference can we make by offering targeted reading development sessions to L1 learners?

Principal focus of the project

The project focused on using standardised Wordchain assessments, alongside individual interviews with learners to identify signifcant level 1 /2 reading chalenges and provide phoincs based tuition across a minimum of 6 sessions within the vocational course. One to oner reading tuition was provided to learners up to twice a week.

What is this about and what were the main findings?

The research determined that Wordchains assessment helped to identify learners who would benefit the most from literacy tuition, leading to improvements in learner self-esteem and self-confidence. The research also linked imporvments in learner self-assessment, and tutor feedback with the phonics interventions.
