Safe colleges: tackling guns, gangs and knives

LSIS has worked with the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and a number of colleges across England to produce advice and guidance on a whole-organisation approach to tackling issues around Guns, Gangs and Knives.

The Guns, Gangs and Knives area of the site contains:

  • a self-assessment tool
  • guidance covering
  • values-led leadership
  • working with other agencies
  • engaging with learners and parents/guardians
  • developing a relevant curriculum
  • creating a safe environment
  • training staff
  • case studies
  • links to research and resources.

LSIS, BIS and its parters also recognise that it is important to promote dialogue and have effective policies and procedures in place to respond to learner complaints and deal with disciplinary issues.  For this reason the Safe Colleges website also has a section entitled Dialogue, Policies and Procedures.

In this area of the site you will find:

  • ideas on promoting dialogue
  • a self-assessment tool
  • guidance on policies and procedures
  • links to examples of polices and procedures from colleges.

There are also links to previously produced guidance on Preventing Violent Extremism.
