One of the biggest challenges that the country has faced for some time is maintaining global competitiveness. If we are to have businesses and a workforce able to compete on the world stage, then up-skilling and re-skilling are essential. This imperative is at the heart of the government's skills agenda.
The current economic climate has put even more emphasis on improving the country's skills and on the need for the learning and skills sector to supply tailored provision. Businesses want programmes that meet their immediate and longer term business needs, which are flexible and cost-effective.
By responding to these needs, providers across the sector can truly be said to be at the heart of economic recovery. They can help employers manage their resources and markets in innovative ways in order to survive the downturn and flourish when the economy recovers.
The learning and skills sector is engaged with their local business community in all sorts of ways, but in these challenging times, more can be done and effective practice can be shared. LSIS wants to play its part in supporting providers that are at the beginning of their employer-engagement journey, as well as those that have well-established working partnerships with employers. We have a range of relevant programmes and resources to support providers through the economic downturn; some of these are available now; others are in development.
We want to work closely with the sector to tailor our portfolio to fit its needs and in many cases are adapting and enhancing our existing offer to better serve them and, ultimately, the economy, learners and local communities.
