The Chinese Centre (North of England) is in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, and in a region where there are approximately 12,000 people of Chinese origin. The centre has attracted more than 1,000 Chinese-speaking learners from the city and outlying areas to its learndirect courses in literacy, numeracy, language and information and communication technology (ICT). The centre also recruits a small number of learners from the non-Chinese community and achieves its objectives to introduce lifelong learning to the local and Chinese communities very effectively. Many learners join the centre with low levels of English language skills, and have little or no previous experience of formal education. Similarly, nearly all the learners come with little or no previous experience of using computers but they quickly get used to using this facility as their main medium for learning.
