Equality and diversity

Equality of opportunity relates to the recruitment, retention and achievement, and progression of learners from different groups. Learning providers need to consider:

• the extent to which recruitment reflects the communities in the areas they serve
• whether retention and achievements data suggest that particular groups of learners are disadvantaged
• implications for curriculum content, delivery, assessment and learner and learning support
• how their wider policies, procedures and staff training will support equality of opportunity

Colleges and providers have to meet the legislative requirements associated with equal opportunities, both as employers and providers of publicly funded training. The law prohibits discrimination against people on the grounds of sex, marital and civil partnership status, gender reassignment, race, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation and age.
