Use of cookies

Posted in

A cookie is a small piece of information which is sent to your computer's hard drive by the web server so that the website can remember who you are. This information may include information relating to your use of our sites, information about your computer such as the computer's IP address and browser type, demographic data and, if you arrived at our site via a link from third party site, the website address of the linking page.

For information about cookies used on other Excellence Gateway websites, please see the EG Treasury websites and cookies page.

We use cookies on websites managed by LSIS for the following purposes:

  • To record data for website statistics tracking (note: no personal data is recorded or transmitted).
  • To enable users to log in to LSIS websites where this facility is available. Cookies used for this purpose are temporary for the duration of a logged in session.
  • To provide required technical information to support specific online applications, such as media player preferences.
  • To provide enhanced features such as social bookmarking tools.

How you can manage which cookies are saved to your computer

When you use the Excellence Gateway website (www.excellencegateway.org.uk) there are three main ways in which you can manage cookies.

1. Managing all cookies saved to your web browser

You can delete cookies from your hard drive at any time. However this may mean that settings such as your stored usernames and passwords will have to be re-entered.

You can set your internet browser so that it will not allow cookies to be stored on your computer. Further information on how to prevent cookies from being stored on your computer can be found on the AboutCookies.org website. Alternatively go to the help menu within your internet browser.

2. Using your EG user account to manage cookies

If you already have, or wish to create, an EG user account, you can manage which features save cookies to your device. You can do this by:

  • logging in to your EG user account or creating a new account;
  • selecting the 'Edit' option on the My account page;
  • on the profile editing page, you can untick the 'AddThis social bookmarking feature' under 'Block configuration'. You can also untick the 'Enable user tracking' option under 'Google Analytics configuration';
  • click 'Save' to save your changes.

Depending on which features you opt out of, cookies relating to these features will not be saved to your device. Saving your opt-outs to your EG user account means that cookies will not be saved when you log in regardless of whether you are using different computers and other devices.

However, please note that you will need to log in to your EG account in order to activate your opt-out choices. If you use the Excellence Gateway website without logging in, cookies will continue to be saved to your device unless you manage them through other means.

3. Opting out of specific services

If you do not wish to use an Excellence Gateway user account to manage cookies, you can still opt out of the main features which save cookies to your device.

  • This website and most other websites managed by LSIS use Google Analytics to track anonymous information about usage of our websites. You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking at any time by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. Please note: this add-on will prevent tracking by Google Analytics for any websites you visit, not only the Excellence Gateway. This opt-out will also only work when you are using a web browser with this add-in enabled.
  • The Excellence Gateway also offers a social bookmarking feature provided by a third party (AddThis). You can opt out of having usage data tracked by the AddThis tool by visiting the opt-out page on the AddThis website. Please note: this opt-out approach will only work when you are using the same device that was used to activate this option.
