LSIS Coaching and Mentoring Programmes and Services

Coaching and mentoring are powerful processes that help individuals and organisations to maximise their potential. LSIS provides a range of programmes, services, and resources to support individuals and organisations in the sector in getting the best out of coaching and mentoring.

At LSIS we are passionate about using coaching to make a difference for staff in the sector and their learners. Our knowledge and experience of the further education and skills sector landscape and the unique challenges you face, combined with our expertise in leadership development informs our personalised approach. Coaching isn’t for everyone, but it is a very powerful and tailored intervention which fits within your timescale and works towards your agenda. Breakthroughs take place quickly and often you begin to use the valuable skills learnt from your coach in your relationships at work.

So, what is coaching?

Coaches don’t have to be experts in the field of work of the person being coached. They are skilled facilitators. In their hands coaching is:

  • a catalyst that enables individuals, teams and organisations to reach their potential;
  • focussed on the person being coached rather than the task to be accomplished; and
  • a transformational process.

...coaching is a way of working with people that leaves them more competent and more fulfilled so that they are more able to contribute to their organisations and find meaning in what they are doing"

Coaching: evoking excellence in others, James Flaherty, Butterworth-Heinmann 2005

What is mentoring?

Mentoring is carried out by someone who offers support based on work experience and knowledge, acting as a trusted advisor and guide. Mentors give advice on how to perform a task. They offer knowledge and wisdom that is particularly useful to the person.

...mentoring involves primarily listening with empathy, sharing experiences (usually mutually), professional friendship, developing insight through reflection, being a sounding board"
