For all those interested in post-16 citizenship education this site contains high quality resources, relevant news and information and details of support for post-16 citizenship (PDF document, 2Mb) available from the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) Post-16 Citizenship Support Programme, managed by LSN.
Citizenship education gives young people the knowledge, skills and understanding to play an effective role in society at local, national and international levels. See Play Your Part: post-16 citizenship guidance (QCDA, 2004) for advice on planning post-16 citizenship provision. For young people aged 16 and over citizenship activities can build on and reinforce the citizenship skills and knowledge they have developed at school as part of the National Curriculum.
Twelve shortlisted entrants to our citizenship through photography competition ‘The Real Picture: strong communities or broken society?’ attended an exhibition and adjudication event kindly hosted by the Parliament Education Service at the Houses of Parliament. Young people presented their work and took questions from a panel of judges including Dinah Caine (Chief Executive, Skillset) and Peter Kennard (Artist and Senior Tutor, Royal College of Art). The winning entry entitled 'The Precinct' (JPEG image, 133KB) was by Louise Pantani from North Warwickshire and Hinckley College. Louise has used her image to explore with others, and raise awareness of, the devastating impact of business closures on their local community. Second prize went to Alex Campbell from Croydon College for his entry 'No one left out' (JPEG image, 173KB) inspired by a government campaign to end rough sleeping and third prize to Tiffany Crossland from Croydon College for her entry 'CONTROL!' (JPEG image, 225KB) which explored the concept of surveillance in relation to community cohesion. All the winners’ and shortlisted entries and citizenship context statements can be viewed in the exhibition and adjudication event programme (PDF document, 4MB). Part of the winners’ prize will be a masterclass in political photomontage with Peter Kennard, a tour of the Houses of Parliament and an opportunity to discuss the themes of their entries with Dr Phyllis Starkey MP, Chair of the Communities and Local Government Committee. View the LSIS press release on the event.
